Belgium extends 40bn/-for Kigoma, Dar projects By Correspondent

Kingdom of Belgium and the Union government of Tanzania have signed a new bilateral development cooperation programme in the tune of Euro 20 million (40bn/-) to support water and agricultural sectors in the country.
 
The agreement was signed yesterday in Dar es Salaam by the Director General of the Belgium Department of Development Cooperation, Peter Moors and the Tanzania Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr Servacius Likwelile.

“Belgium has been working with Tanzania for well over four decades now and has acquired a recognized expertise in both supported sectors,” Moors explained noting that with this new agreement “…Belgium’s commitment to join efforts with Tanzania in poverty eradication has been confirmed.”
 
The new development programme covers a period of two years – 2014-2015 and the focus area is Kigoma Region while Dar es Salaam, another area of priority will also be a benefactor especially when it comes to water and sanitation provision.
 
To meet the city’s demand for clean and safe water as well as sanitation services at least 1.8bn/- will be directed to the sub sector.
 
Detailing, Likwelile said that under the first grant agreement, the government of the Kingdom of Belgium will make available to the government of Tanzania a grant amount of Euro 6 million (13bn/-) to finance the implementation of the Natural Resources Management Project for local economic development in Kigoma region.
 
“This project aims at improving and enabling the work environment and strengthening capacities for sustainable management of natural resources and more equitable local economic development for greater community benefits of Kigoma region,” Likwelile explained.
